Fire Safety Plan Fire Wardens
Designating trained Fire Wardens is a crucial step in maintaining fire and life safety in your building. As required by the Ontario Fire Code (Section 2.8), every building must have a Fire Safety Plan, which includes appointing supervisory staff, such as Fire Wardens, to oversee fire safety procedures.
Fire Wardens serve as the link between the Fire Safety Plan and building occupants, ensuring everyone understands emergency procedures. Their key roles include fire prevention, identifying hazards, and coordinating safe evacuations. Training is essential to prepare them for their responsibilities, covering fire safety systems, evacuation protocols, fire hazards, human behavior in emergencies, and communication with first responders.
Training and Fire Drills
Fire Wardens should receive training annually, with fire drills conducted regularly to reinforce their skills. The Ontario Fire Code mandates different drill frequencies based on building type:
– High-rise buildings: every 3 months
– Schools: 3 times per term
– Daycares and care facilities: monthly
– All buildings: at least once every 12 months
Fire Warden Responsibilities
Each Fire Warden is assigned a specific zone, becoming familiar with its layout, occupants, and potential hazards. In an emergency, they:
– Guide occupants to safety
– Assist persons requiring help
– Communicate with emergency responders
– Ensure evacuation procedures are followed
Outside of emergencies, Fire Wardens monitor fire hazards, promote fire safety awareness, and ensure compliance with the Fire Safety Plan.
